These rings have been passed from father to daughter and from mother to son in Elvish Cities for the past 3,000 years. Young Elvish ladies keep their rings until motherhood, when the rings are then passed to their first-born sons. and the cycle repeats.

Matriarchal in nature, each ring is imprinted with the year that the ring passes from mother to son, sometimes with hundreds of years between inheritances. 

Due to the mystical nature of the magic contained with the rings, these rings must pass into human hands every 3rd inheritance cycle.
